Many language students have a French dictionary. This tool allows people to easily find words to see what they are in the other language. People find it useful.
Many French dictionaries found their way onto the Internet. Alta Vista and now Google have translation services. These can be used to translate sentences or entire blocks of text. That's useful when speaking with people from other countries.
Here are some words from a French dictionary. Bread heated over some kind of flame is toast. Many kinds of toast exist. These include French toast which is called eggy bread parts of the United Kingdom. The French call it pain perdu. Bread is coated with egg batter then fried. It can be topped with butter, fruit, syrup, or many other items including strawberries.
Toast in the French dictionary can be to honor someone or something. We're familiar with this when the best man toasts the bride and groom at a wedding reception. The French call it en l'honneur de.
Another word found in the French dictionary is bread. That's pain. It's not really bread, but rather a loaf such as a loaf of ice. Panade is the word for bread soup.
In a French dictionary word restaurant would be Café. We use that word in English as well as we use the word restaurant. A restaurant owner is a restauranteur. In that language it's a masculine noun.
The French word for potato is found in the French dictionary – pomme. You might eat some pommes frites with your hot dog – they're French fries. The children's television host Fred Rogers once bought some pommes frites from Chef Brocket. Potato soup is pommes de la soupe. If you wanted a baked potato with some cheese on it you might ask for pommes du fromage.
