A French dictionary will contain the word bread. Pain is the literal French translation. It does not refer to a loaf of bread or a slice of bread, but more specifically to a loaf of soap, or ice. Panade in French is bread soup.
Cafe in a French dictionary would be a restaurant. Cafe is also an English word. A restaurant owner is a restauranteur. It's a masculine noun.
In a French dictionary pomme is a potato. When turned into french fries the French would call it pommes frites. The children's television host Fred Rogers once bought some pommes frites from Chef Brocket. Potato soup is pommes de la soupe. Pommes du fromage would be potato with some type of cheese.
