Greek can live for everyone who has a Greek dictionary.

Most often this is a Greek to English translation book or service. We'll examine some of these.

The Greek dictionary may not contain the phrase it's Greek to me, but it should be examined. It's often thought Shakespeare wrote it. But for my own part it was Greek to me was uttered in his play Julius Caesar. It's a flowery way of saying something isn't understandable. Shakespeare did not create it. It was something people often said when Shakespeare was alive. It can be traced to Roman times. A similar phrase in Latin - Graecum est; non legitur – means it is Greek and cannot be read. Shakespeare certainly did have something to do with the phrase surviving to the present.

There are current uses for a Greek dictionary. Ancient languages are still alive. Many of our present words have roots in Latin and Greek. A knowledge of Greek can help people learn about English. People who have a good grasp of the language go far in life. This includes speaking and writing.

Etymology deals with the origin of words. In our language many of the words have roots in the Greek. A Greek dictionary explores this. Many of our prefixes and suffixes come from Greek. Androgynous combines two Greek roots. Gynous means not of men while Andro refers to men. The word is basically man and not man like. It's hard to tell the gender of an androgynous person. Get it?

Google Translate is one of the best translators around. It's basically a computer version of a Greek dictionary. Likewise Greek phrases can be translated back into English. It's useful for conversations with people who speak Greek. It's not perfect. But it works well enough.

A Greek dictionary can open a whole new world of language for people. Try one today.
